The Root Of Guard Passing

passI view the whole of jiu Jitsu according to the ‘triage’ of survive, escape, finish. As you have experienced in recent classes I am not focused on learning a million techniques but instead learning the core principles that translate into a million ways to gain victory. Let’s look at how this ‘triage’ applies to guard passing.

Surviving in the guard means NOT getting submitted or swept. This is of the highest level of urgency when passing the guard, if you are swept or worse, submitted, then whatever guard passing techniques you had in mind are irrelevant. Survival in the guard is directly correlated to your base, posture, and patience.

Escaping the guard can only be achieved once you have survived. Escaping the guard simply refers to your ability to identify what’s in the way and use your timing, concepts, and techniques to go over, under, or around the offending block.

Finishing in the guard refers to the actual process of having passed the guard by dominating the angles and controlling the hips of the opponent thereby ending up in a position of control such as cross body or mount.

Adopt these concepts into your Jiu Jitsu and watch as your guard passing percentage rises!
