Gracie Jiu-Jitsu’s Energy Efficient Principle

1383064_449203421856174_1774737440_nDuring training at Gracie NEPA we always operate under the mindset that our potential opponent is heavier, stronger, faster, ad more aggressive than we are, and this is why the energy efficiency theory is among the fundamental principles of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. What is the energy efficiency theory? Well in its simplest terms it can be defined as your technique must not over rely on speed and coordination to be successful against an opponent and must function according to natural body movements.

It is fun to go to the movies and watch Superman leap tall building in a single bound but you cannot relate to that because you are bound by the laws of gravity. Why do I mention this?  I do so because all too often we think of Jiu-Jitsu in the same way.  We try to make Jiu-Jitsu and ourselves into something it is not. It is okay to emulate the great fighters of today, like Anderson Silva and Jon Jones. It is okay to admire the young gun at your academy that rolls and spins and bends on the mat in such a way that he resembled a child’s top. However it is important to understand you can relate to these athletes. Remember jiu-jitsu was created to even the playing field for the small, weak person.

Grand Master Helio never defeated any giants. Royce never defeated any giants. The giants all defeated themselves! By adapting the survival mindset, to not win the fight but instead avoid defeat at all costs, and employing the theory of energy efficiency and allowing the giants to burn out their energy these icons were able to defeat opponents that outweighed them by 100 pounds or more!
