Why Should A Child Train Jiu-Jitsu?

10256450_10203484426848798_5656394055806331901_nFriends often ask of me, ‘would you recommend jiu-jitsu for my child?’ My answer is ‘of course!’ The question that they really mean to ask however is ‘WHY would you recommend jiu-jitsu for my child?’. Well, like any martial art, jiu-jitsu offers benefits such as increased balance and coordination, an attitude of  respect and discipline, having a sense of being part of a larger community and the responsibilities associated with that sense, and of course unshakeable self esteem and confidence. There are however certain other benefits that jiu-jitsu offers a child that other martial arts can not. Let’s take a look at a few of these benefits.

  •  Becoming adept at the grappling techniques that comprise jiu-jitsu requires patience, focus, and a heightened sense of attention to details. Jiu-jitsu literally trains the mind as well as the body! A child of jiu-jitsu is more alert, listens better, and is more aware of the surroundings not only on the mats but at home and in school!
  • Although jiu-jitsu is comprised of over 600 recognized techniques each and every technique conforms to the broader ‘concepts’ of biomechanics and leverage. In jiu-jitsu a child can learn concepts that translate into a wide array of techniques. By learning conceptually every child of any shape and size can learn how to make a technique their own. The critical problem solving skills of a child of jiu-jitsu allows them to find a solution to making any technique work for them! Even better, these critical thinking skills spill over into life off the mats, allowing a child to earn better grades at school, perform better in other sports, and avoid the pack mentality of peer pressure groups!
