Oh Crap! I Suck At…

i suckQuite often Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners will become panicked when they realize that an area of their jiu-jitsu skill set is lagging behind.  Whether it is lapel chokes or armlocks, triangles or sweeps, takedowns or berimbolo; a bjj aficionado can become distraught over a deficient aspect of their game. Well, I am here to say, just relax.

The simple truth is that there will always be an area of your game that is behind the curve. From white belt to black belt, we all have deficiencies in our game that need improvement. Quite frankly it is impossible be equally proficient at every single aspect of your game all at once. So again, I say, just relax.

Take comfort in knowing you can teach an old dog new tricks! When it comes to those under-developed areas of your jiu-jitsu: don’t panic, accept it, embrace it, and take solace in the fact that everybody goes through it!  Just keep studying, keep practicing, accept instruction, and if you priorities your areas of weakness in your training in time they will catch up to your better developed aspects of the game!
